The 4th Annual Women’s Event, hosted by The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation, celebrated another year of both raising awareness and funds in the fight against breast cancer and the significant strides made in breast cancer research. September 22, 2006 more than 600 women gathered for the luncheon and silent auction, which netted more than $93,000. This year’s guest speakers were Cindi Hart, 2006 U.S. Olympics Volunteer Coach of the Year, cyclist, nurse, and breast cancer survivor; and Denise A. Yardley, M.D., director of breast cancer research at The Sarah Cannon Research Institute.
For fifteen years, The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation has cherished sharing Sarah Cannon’s fun-loving character’s name , especially created for the Grand Ole Opry stage, with everyone associated with her legacy of caring. For decades, the engaging “Howwwwdddddyyyy” put a smile on the faces of Grand Ole Opry fans and continues to warm the hearts of cancer patients and their families, caretakers, and volunteers and friends of The Foundation. This summer, The Foundation celebrated the fifth anniversary of the opening of The Foundation’s Patient Resource Center.
“Hope through research, support, and education,” is the guiding theme that runs throughout the Foundation’s efforts, as well as this year’s Women’s Event, and that would make Minnie proud.
The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation is a nonprofit public charity committed to funding programs that provide the greatest benefit to cancer patients and their families. By supporting new programs in cancer research, education, and patient and family services, we honor the memory of Sarah Cannon, a cancer patient herself, who created the beloved character “Minnie Pearl.”
