The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation was founded by Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr., and Dr. Steven Stroup in 1987 as The Cancer Education and Research Council. When Sarah Cannon was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990, she gave permission for her stage name, "Minnie Pearl," to be used as the name of the Foundation.
Today, The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation is widely known for its research program, which is designed to evaluate and improve treatment for all types of cancer. The Minnie Pearl Cancer Research Network currently has more than 400 oncologists in 26 states participating in its research programs.
The second component of The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation is the Patient Resource Center, which offers support services for cancer patients and their families.
Services include:
• Counseling with oncology social workers – assisting cancer patients and families with specific needs and helping them plan for life changes
• Internet access with links to useful Web sites for reliable cancer information
• "Cancer College" educational programs
• Magazines, pamphlets, audiovisual materials and a lending library of books about cancer
• Free meeting space available to cancer and other health-related groups
• Travel Grant Program – providing reimbursement for some patient travel expenses
