We have been actively promoting prostate cancer awareness by recently underwriting prostate screenings at various locations throughout Middle Tennessee and participating in events that promote a health-conscious call to action.

Each year, approximately 220,900 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, the most common form of cancer among men. Symptoms often do not show up until the cancer is in its later stages, which makes preventive screening even more critical to early detection and successful treatment of the disease.

As an initiative to beat the odds, the MPCF has underwritten free prostate cancer screenings throughout all TriStar locations in September 2009. Click here for a listing. Also, teaming up with the services of Urology Associates, P.C., the MPCF recently sponsored prostate cancer screenings for United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 1853 employees in Spring Hill, Tennessee. Over 140 employees either over the age of 40 or with a family history of prostate cancer took advantage of the free screenings for the disease, which is the most common cancer among men.

“Men tend to avoid preventive care, so public prostate cancer screenings are especially valuable. Bringing the service to them, rather than making them come in, takes much of the pressure off,” says Matthew Hassan, M.D., of Urology Associates.

“These screening efforts have been a tremendous success and served as important men’s health forums. If only one person who was screened has an earlier detection because of our efforts, that of course will be time well spent. The information alone during these screenings have provided great awareness about a disease that takes a man’s life every 19 minutes,” says Susan Earl Hosbach, MPCF Executive Director.

Urology Associates, P.C., has also recently organized the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge 5K Run/1Mile Fun Walk and an inaugural Songwriters’ Night to launch the run/walk. Both events benefit screenings and awareness programs through The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation.
