New Oncology Dietitian Aug 02, 2009

To better meet the needs of those impacted by cancer, The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation (MPCF) has added a full-time registered dietitian to its staff. Registered Dietitian Kimberly Petersen joins TMPCF to offer free nutrition consultations to any adults at any stage of cancer survivorship. An oncology dietitian helps promote prevention and combat dietary problems associated with cancer and its treatment such as decreased appetite, weight loss, and difficulty chewing or swallowing through specialized recipes and food preparation to ensure proper nutrition. “Our commitment to adding a full-time oncology dietitian to our staff is an important one for us,” said Susan Hosbach, executive director of The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation. “Kimberly’s experience enables her to help support and manage the unique nutritional needs of individuals on a personal basis, enhancing our ability to offer complete and complimentary care.” Petersen graduated from the University of Kentucky and is a registered dietitian certified in weight management. Her experience ranges from coordinating clinical trials in obesity, diabetes, dislipidemia, and oncology to health promotion and wellness. As TMPCF dietitian, she hopes to improve the quality of life of cancer survivors through education, intervention, awareness, counseling, and individual empowerment. Petersen consults with patients over the phone, via e-mail, and during consultations at both TMPCF’s Resource Center and other treatment locations. Those interested in consultations and/or nutritional presentations may reach her at kpetersen@minniepearl.org or by calling (615) 467-1936 or toll-free (877) 467-1936. This dietitian service is offered free of charge, along with oncology social work services, educational materials, certified life coaching for living beyond cancer, and various programs available at TMPCF’s Resource Center, regardless of a person’s treating facility or type of cancer. The Minnie Pearl Center Foundation (TMPCF) is a nonprofit public charity committed to improving the lives of people affected by cancer, as well as promoting cancer awareness and education. Through its Resource Center, TMPCF offers oncology social work services, nutrition consultations, a library of cancer-related materials, and numerous educational and support programs free of charge. These services and programs complement cancer treatment by assisting people in navigating their way through a cancer diagnosis and positively influencing their quality of life. For more information, call (615) 467-1936 or toll-free (877) 467-1936.
