Best Meats to Eat Jul 29, 2010

Summertime brings many of us outdoors to enjoy the company of friends and great food.  Grilling is especially popular this time of year.  Meat consumption, especially red meat consumption, should be limited.  Make sure your favorite meats have little fat and minimal nitrates. Processed meats, such as hot dogs, often contain high amounts of possible cancer-causing nitrates. Watch the above video, featuring Minnie Pearl registered dietitian Kimberly, as she discusses the best meats to buy.

Laughing with Minnie Jul 20, 2010

If there is one thing we can learn from our namesake, Minnie Pearl, and the joyful and exuberant life she lived, it is that laughter is great medicine!  Over the years, Minnie Pearl kept people in stitches during her performances as part of the Grand Ole Opry.  She is a wonderful example of how life-giving and rejuvenating laughter can be.

During difficult and challenging times in our lives, laughter and humor often go by the wayside.  It is not always appropriate, and it is certainly not easy, to laugh while living with cancer and the challenges it brings.  However, at times, laughter can be a wonderful tool that can be used to lighten the spirit, bring loved ones together, relieve stress, relax, and improve your mood.

If your cancer or life journey has brought you to a place where you feel that you want or need to laugh,  I would invite you to explore your sense of humor today.  Take some time for yourself to watch a funny movie, to read a humorous book, or to call a friend who brings a smile to your face.  Perhaps you yourself have an infectious laugh and a few stories to tell.  Sharing laughter with others is a wonderful gift for everyone, including you!

I encourage you to take a trip into Minnie Pearl’s world - to take some time for yourself, to relax, let go, and enjoy your sense of humor.  I hope this joke from Minnie Pearl, shared in The Best Jokes Minnie Pearl Ever Told (Plus Some That She Overheard!) by Kevin Kenworthy, will bring a smile to your face today:

A pediatrician in town always plays a game with some of his young patients to test their knowledge of body parts. One day, while pointing to a little boy’s ear, the doctor asked him, “Is this your nose?” Immediately the little boy turned to his mother and said, “Mom, I think we’d better find a new doctor!”
