Journal of Hope:
Sherry’s Run

Sherry Whitaker will always be remembered for her attitude of service, courage and faith. Her family and friends were inspired to create a run with one goal and purpose: to finish the race that has become Sherry’s Run. “If we can help one person in the whole world it will be worth it because, I guarantee, that one person is the whole world to somebody, as Sherry was the whole world to me,” says Gary Whitaker.

The second annual Sherry’s Run 5K run/walk was held September 10 beginning at Wilson Bank & Trust, in Lebanon, Tennessee, to raise awareness and funds for colon cancer research.

Sherry lost her battle with cancer in May 2004. She was an inspirational 44-year-old wife, mother, and friend. Sherry’s husband Gary and friends founded the event in her memory only a few weeks after her death. This year’s run had more than 700 participants and The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation was one beneficiary of the money raised for colon cancer research. Sherry’s Run honored and remembered Sherry Whitaker, Johnny Keel and Bobby Barnes. Johnny Keel is a two-time colon cancer survivor and Bobby Barnes lost his battle with colon cancer in July 2002.

Gary Whitaker and the Sherry’s Run committee would like to thank the sponsors: Kenny Chesney, Maple Hill Church of Christ, University Medical Center, Wilson Bank & Trust, GRS, Bridgestone, Creek Wood Marina and Broadway Drive-In Theater.
